The Wine Pub in San Diego: Fun Date Night Spot

“What should we do tonight?”

Whether planning a night with friends or looking for something new to do with our partner, this age-old question is one we receive from our readers regularly.

If you’re in San Diego, head to The Wine Pub in Point Loma for great wine, excellent food, and a casual yet upbeat vibe.

Happy hour is every day, 4 PM – 6 PM, with appetizers, wine, and craft beers on draft for only $6 each, and the entertainment starts shortly after.

The Wine Pub Menu

The Wine

As you may have guessed by the name, The Wine Pub offers a variety of domestic and new world wines that is sure to meet the taste of almost every palate.

To start the night off, there is a variety of wines by the glass to choose from, including a sparkling wine by Domaine Laurier, a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, a Napa Valley Chardonnay, a German Riesling, and a Grenache Blanc and Orange Muscat from Amador County, an Oregon Pinot Noir, a Paso Robles Merlot, and a Zinfandel from Mendocino, California. Looking closely at the menu, you’ll notice that many wines are from small-production wineries throughout California. We are always happy to see when a local business supports these wineries.

The Wine Pub also has several exciting wines by the bottle, including a refreshing Italian Organic Prosecco Rosé (also by the glass) for bubbles; a delicious Viognier by CASS Wines and an Italian Vermentino by La Spinetta for whites; a Nebbiolo by Villa Montefiori and a Mourvèdre by Cava Maciel, both from Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico.

One of our favorite wines at The Wine Pub is the 2018 Fotinos Pinot Noir, a light ruby color with a charming nose of strawberries, raspberries, and vanilla, and a light, silky texture and flavors of cherries, cranberries, and strawberries on the palate. You could pair this with nearly every item on The Wine Pub menu.

Not into wine? No problem. The Wine Bar also offers a rotation of craft beer and local kombucha.

The Food

In addition to the well-rounded wine menu, the food at The Wine Pub is delicious and not overpriced. For our Wine Pub experience, we invited our friend Sarah to join us. We started with the bacon-wrapped shrimp with romesco, a perfect bite-sized blend of roasted tomato and pepper flavor balanced with the salty and savory of the bacon.

We also ordered the cheese and charcuterie, a massive board of three artisan kinds of cheese, salami, prosciutto, nuts, fruit, and artisan bread. The cheese and charcuterie board are offered in two sizes, small (1-2 people) and large (2 or more), and are a screaming deal at $14 and $27, respectively.

We ordered the brulee pear and goat cheese flatbread for our entree, a simple yet perfect combination of sweet juicy pear and a creamy-crumbly, tart goat cheese. We also had the poke lettuce wraps that offered a hefty amount of fresh tuna, a sweet and mildly spicy sauce, and a generous serving of seaweed.

You will not go wrong ordering any of the four items described above, and by the time we had wrapped up our experience, we were already planning our next visit to The Wine Pub.

Entertainment at The Wine Pub

On top of the great wine and food, The Wine Pub entertains throughout the week on their intimate patio. Tuesday is jazz night from 6 PM – 8 PM, and Wednesday – Saturday offers an eclectic mix of local artists performing from 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM. The Wine Pub’s proximity to the Bay can get chilly at night, but not to worry. If you are flying solo, there are a fire and heat lamps for warmth, and if you are out on a date, it’s the perfect opportunity to snuggle up to your partner.
