Westerly Public House, Point Loma

An exciting addition to Point Loma is Westerly Public House, a rustic 60-seat Cali-Aussie fusion restaurant. This coastal establishment, located within The Monseraz Hotel, features delicious meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner that tastefully combine cuisine from both California’s Venice Beach and Australia’s Bondi Beach.

The spacious central dining area features a fun, inviting bar crafted from repurposed surfboards and it extends out into the courtyard where you will find plenty of open air seating, tiled fireplaces, couches and even a community table. This is a great space for not only dinner but also to enjoy a more casual happy hour or to lounge with your friends and enjoy the DJ on a Saturday evening or for Sunday Brunch.

San Diego Chef Jesse Paul curated the menu focusing on delightful sea-side flavors and fresh, local produce. His passion for distinctive flavors and zero-waste cooking results in memorable dishes that utilize the best ingredients that San Diego has to offer.

The Cocktails

Westerly Public House has a sunny cocktail menu inspired by surf culture and long days on the beach. We tried a few of them and here are our recommendations! The ‘Yacht Club Fizz’ is kind of like a tropical twist on the traditional Gin Fizz cocktail, egg white included. The Daisy Mae is crafted from tequila and sparkling wine and is fabulously fruity with fresh passion fruit and grapefruit juices.

Looking for something with a bit more of a kick that is still delightfully balanced? The Westerly Revolver is perfect with bourbon, a splash of coffee liqueur, cinnamon and bitters. Their tasteful beer and wine menus also feature various locally crafted, hand-selected beverages to complement the restaurant’s locally sourced fare.

The Appetizers

We had a fantastic dinner there, starting off with the Kale Apple Salad and the Bloomin’ Mushroom. The salad was more sweet than savory, chock full of superfoods like kale, quinoa, pepitas and apples tossed in a creamy lemon-tahini dressing and topped with freshly shaved pecorino cheese. The Bloomin’ Mushroom was a bit more of an indulgence, enoki mushrooms that were buttermilk battered and delicately fried, served with a rich and creamy adobo sauce for dipping. To be honest, the portions were so generous that these two dishes alone could be a meal!

The Entrées

For our main course we selected the Piri Piri Chicken and the Everything Spice Seared Salmon. To be honest, chicken is not a dish we normally order at an upscale restaurant but it came highly recommended by our server and the spiced coconut puree sounded really interesting. Wow! The chicken was beautifully juicy and the skin on the breast portion had just the right amount of crisp to it. The coconut puree had a red curry characteristic to it that was fabulous and was great with both the chicken and the crispy potatoes that came with it. The salmon dish was also outstanding, prepared skin on and seared with the everything spice. The house made lemon yogurt was a great balance to the acidity of the couscous, fennel and grapefruit salad served on the side.

The Dessert

We really didn’t save room for dessert but were persuaded to take just a bite of the Pot du Creme, Chef Paul’s signature creation. Nothing should EVER taste that good! Sweet, salty, rich, creamy and with the crunch of caramel popcorn all at the same time. Needless to say, we ended up eating the whole thing!
