Matsuoka Sushi in San Diego

“What’s the best sushi in San Diego,” is a question we commonly receive.

In all seriousness, that is a hard question to give a definitive answer. San Diego has always been known for excellent tacos, California burritos and fresh seafood, but what about sushi?

What may be surprising is that San Diego has a vibrant sushi scene, with several excellent restaurants to choose from, and one of those places is Matsuoka on Convoy Street.

Going on a first date or looking for a new spot for date night?

Every dish at Matsuoka is a work of art and guaranteed to impress.

Our Experience at Matsuoka

We went to Matsuoka on a weekday afternoon, and were greeted by Chef Hajime Matsuoka and staff.

Mr. Matsuoka is a Master Sushi Chef from Japan and according to his training and strict guidelines upholding the art of sushi making, he is the only person that will prepare your food.

We were particularly impressed with the bento box of temarizushi, a rarely seen variation of bon bon shaped sushi balls. This type of sushi is labor intensive and traditionally prepared for special occasions. Each piece was beautifully designed and arranged in the box and it was topped off with an edible gold flake garnish.

We had another bento box with an assortment of cooked tempura specialties, edamame and a piece of barbecue black cod. That black cod was so buttery in texture it literally melts in one’s mouth.

We tried two sushi rolls starting first with the Hatsuhana, a visual masterpiece filled with spicy bluefin tuna, avocado, cucumber and micro cilantro and topped with a generous portion of tempura lobster tail bites. Next, we had the most beautiful Spider Roll we’ve ever seen, that was finished with a heavy coating of edible gold flake that was just as tasty as sparkly.

We were even impressed with the full flavor of the miso soup appetizer and matcha green tea ice cream. We believe you can taste love in food and it’s safe to say that everything at Matsuoka has a bit of love in it. And everything tastes even better paired with a bit of dry sake.

Matsuoka is a new addition to Convoy Street and is part of the RakiRaki Ramen family of restaurants. The restaurant is located next to RakiRaki and you can order from both of those menus, in addition to the Yasai vegan sushi concept that is available at both.

If you love sushi this needs to be on your list as the next place you try in San Diego. We went on a Monday and the restaurant filled up with excited patrons soon after opening. Do be aware of possible wait times on weekends.
